らきすたを題材にして日常会話のセリフを学んでいきます。

解釈が間違っていたり、誤記があったりするかもしれません。

Here's one.
Can you eat the very last bite of an ice pop without dropping it?

棒アイスの最後の一口落とさずにちゃんと食べられる?
here's one → もう一つ(話題が)あるよ

very → lastを修飾していて、"本当に最後の"というニュアンス

ice pop → アイスキャンディー

Miyuki:
Wait, you drop it?

落とすんですか ?

 

Tsukasa:
If you don't eat it the right way...
It falls off, doesn't it?

上手に食べないと …
落っこちちゃうじゃない ?
the right way → 正しい方法で

fall off → 落ちる


Miyuki:
Yes.

Tsukasa:
How do you do it, Kona-chan?
こなちゃんはどうしてるの ?


Konata:
I suck it off the stick.

舐めて食べきる。
suck off → 吸う。吸うという意味から卑猥な表現としても使われる。

 

Tsukasa:
Oh...

へぇ〜

Miyuki:
Or maybe you could just turn it around while you eat it, like this.

こう 、回転させながら食べるのはどうでしょう?

turn around → 回転させる


Tsukasa:
Oh, that's a good idea.

それ 、いいかも。

Miyuki:
And then there's soft-serve ice cream, which I'm not very fond of.

ソフトクリームはあまり好きじゃないんです 、私。

soft-serve ice cream → ソフトクリーム

,which → コンマ+関係代名詞は継続用法と呼ばれる。"そして"のように訳せば問題ない。

be fond of → ~を好む


Tsukasa:
Huh? What's wrong with it?

え ?どうして ?


Miyuki:
I hate how you're always left with an empty cone at the end of it.

コーンだけが残っちゃうのが嫌なんですよね。

how → このhowは the way と置き換えれば訳しやすい。

I hate the way ~ → ~する方法が嫌い  →  ~することが嫌い と訳せる。

ちなみにthe way と howは一緒に使うことができない。

I hate the way how はNG。


Tsukasa:
You're right.
There's never any ice cream left, just the cone.

そうそう 、いつもコーンだけ残っちゃうんだよね。

left → ice creamを過去分詞で修飾しているので、直訳すると"残っているアイスクリームが一切ない"となる。


Konata:
I always try to push the ice cream further and further down into the cone as I eat it.

私はアイスをどんどん下の方に押し込みながら食べるようにしてるよ。

try to → ~しようと試みる。ちなみにtry ~ing は"試しに~してみる"という意味になり、意味が異なるので注意。

push into → 押し込む

further → further単体では"さらに遠くに"を意味する。よってfurther and furtherはより強調されている表現となる。

as → ここのasは"~するとき"と訳すので、as I eat it は"それを食べるとき"となる。

Miyuki:
But how in the world do you do that?

どうやって押し込むんですか ?

how in the world → 一体どうやって。in the worldを付けることで一体全体という強調の意味になる。


Konata:
While I eat it, I do a push and shove thing.

食べながらこうグイグイと

shove → 押し込む



Miyuki:
A push and shove thing?
グイグイ … ですか?


Tsukasa:
You try to balance everything out, don't you?
ゆきちゃんはバランスに拘るんだね。

balance out → 帳尻を合わせる

Miyuki:
I suppose.

そうですね。

suppose → thinkよりも確信がない状態に使われる

Konata:
Oh, here's another one.
How do you eat curried rice? Do you mix the curry with the rice?

じゃ 、カレーライスはどうしてる?
ルーとライスを混ぜて食べる?

curried → スパイスを使った料理の表現に使われる

 

Miyuki:
No, but I do try to have equal amounts of curry and rice left over for my last bite.

いいえ 、混ぜたりはしませんが。
均等になるようにしています。

I do try → 動詞の前にdoを付けることで文が強調される

left over → 食べ残し


Tsukasa:
I like mixing it up.
How do you eat it?
私は混ぜちゃう。
こなちゃんは?

Konata:
It all depends on the curry.
If I pour some sauce on it or drop a raw egg on top, then I mix it up.
カレーによるな。
ソース かけたり 、 生卵を落としたりする時は 、混ぜ混ぜするかな。

depend on → ~に依存する

pour → 注ぐ

raw egg → 生卵


Tsukasa:
You put sauce on curry?
カレー に ソース ?


Konata:
Oh, yeah. It's tasty.

うん 、 おいしいよ〜

 

Miyuki:
Do you put sauce on fried eggs too?
目玉焼きにも ソース ですか ?

fried egg → 目玉焼き


Konata:
Nope, I put soy sauce on fried eggs.
ううん 、 目玉焼きは 醤油。

Nope → noのくだけた表現


Tsukasa:
Oh. See, when I use that I use mayonnaise.
へぇ〜 、 私はマヨネーズ かけるよ。

that → ここでは醤油を指している。醤油を使うときはマヨネーズを使う → つまりマヨネーズを使う


Miyuki:
Mayonnaise on fried eggs, but not on hard-boiled eggs?
ゆで 卵じゃなくて 、 目玉きにですか ?

hard-boiled egg → ゆで卵


Tsukasa:
Mm-hm.
You know, mayonnaise is good with pretty much every egg dish.
うん ! マヨネーズ はね 、 玉子料理には だいたい 合うよ

pretty much → ほとんど


Konata:
You put it on curry too?
カレー にもかけるの ?


Tsukasa:
Mm-hmm!
I put mayo on white rice and on beef bowls.
It goes good with that sweet broth.
Oh, and on parent-child bawls, too.
You know how the chicken's the parent and the egg's the child?
And how mayonnaise is made from eggs too?
I just put a little blob of it on top and I call that the Relative Bowl.
うん !
白いご 飯には もちろんだけど、
牛丼もね 、 甘いタレ によく 合うんだ。
親子丼も おいしいよ。
玉子と 鶏肉は 親子でしょう ?
だから 、 玉子が 原料の マヨネーズ を かけて、
私は 親戚丼って 呼んでるんだよ。
white rice → 白いご飯

beef bowl → 牛丼

go good with → うまくいく

broth → 煮汁、だし

parent-child bowl → 親子丼

You know how ~ → ~ということを知っているでしょ?→ ~でしょ?

blob → 小さい塊、ぼんやりとした(形の)もの。ここではマヨネーズを指している。

relative → 相関的な、親戚


Konata:
Hmm.

Tsukasa:
And I used to really hate natto beans, but if I put some mayonnaise on them, I can eat 'em.
あとね 、 苦手だった 納豆も
マヨネーズ と 一緒だと 食べられたよ。

used to → 昔は~だった。似た表現でbe used to は"~に慣れている"を意味するので注意。

'em → themの短縮形


Konata:
Ugh, I can't imagine that.
想像できん。


Tsukasa:
Oh, but the tastiest thing has to be when you put mayonnaise right on top of some soft-boiled eggs!
あ 、 でも 半熟の ゆで 卵に マヨネーズ かけるの が 一番おいしいかも。

the tastiest → the + ~estで最上級を表している → 一番おいしい

has to be → have to は~する必要と訳されるので、have to be は~である必要がある → ~に違いない となる。

right → まさしく

soft-boiled egg → 半熟ゆで卵 


Konata:
Even the fried eggs are half-cooked at my house.
うちは 、 目玉焼きでも 半熟だよ。

Even → ~でさえも


Tsukasa:
Really?
へぇ〜


Konata:
Yup. That's just how my dad likes his eggs.
I guess it's because he always liked to suck on the yolk.
So if you fry the egg too much, then the yolk gets too hard and my dad can't suck the yolk out.
うちの お 父さんの 好みなんだ。
で 、 黄身の 部分を チュー って 吸うのが 好きなんだって。
だから ここ を 焼き過ぎちゃうと、
ちゅうちゅう できなくなるって

Yup → yesのカジュアル表現

how my dad likes → お父さんが好きな方法

suck on → 吸う

yolk → 黄身

suck out → 吸う

 
Tsukasa:
So, how do you eat chicken skewers?
焼き鳥って どうやって 食べる ?

skewer → 串。よってchicken skewerで焼き鳥を意味する


Konata:
What do you mean "how"?
どうやってって ?


Tsukasa:
Do you eat it right off the skewer?
Or do you pull it off with chopsticks?
串の まま かぶりつく ?  それとも 箸で 串から はずす ?

eat off → (皿からとって)そのまま食べる

right →  すぐに

pull off → 取り外す


Miyuki:
Let me see...
When I'm alone, I'll eat it off the skewer.
But when I'm eating in public or with company, I'll use chopsticks to pull it off.
一人で 一本食べる 時は そのまま 食べますが、
大勢で 食べる 時は 、 串からはずしますね。

eat off → (皿からとって)そのまま食べる

 


Tsukasa:
Yeah, and dontcha feel weird when there's only one piece left on the plate?
そうそう 、 最後の 一個が 残る時って 気まずくない ?

dontcha → don't you

weird → 変な、奇妙な


Miyuki:
Yes. The last bite certainly makes things awkward at the table.
ええ 、 最後の 一個って 食べづらいですよね。

certainly → 確かに

makes things awkward → make O CでOをCの状態にする。awkwardは"ぎこちない"。よってthings(事)をawkward(ぎこちなく)する → 気まずい → 食べづらい  となる

 
Konata:
And then it gets later and later, and no one eats it.
It gets all dry and stale, and it's not lookin' so tasty.
And no one really wants to eat it, but they don't wanna say anything.
And then the waiter comes over to take the plate, and you're like,
"Whoa, we're still eating that!"
In the end, we all go home without eating that last bite.
誰も食べないまま 時間が 過ぎて、
なんか 乾いてきて、
いかにも マズ そうになって、
もう 誰も手を 出さないんだけど 、 店員が 下げようとすると、
「 あっそれまだ 食べますから 」 なんて 言っちゃって、
でも 結局食べないまま 帰っちゃったりね。

stale → 新鮮でない


Miyuki:
Oh, that's such a waste!
もったいない ですね。

such a → 強調の意味で使われている。wasteを強調している。


Tsukasa:
I feel sorry for it...
Oh, with Korean barbecue, I feel sorry for the meat that's left on the grill that turns to charcoal.
なんか 可哀相。
あ 、 焼き肉のさ 、
網に 真っ黒に 焦げて 残ったお 肉も 可哀相だよね。

turn to → ~に変わる

charcoal → 炭


Miyuki:
Well, at a Korean barbecue, you're always eating and chatting at the same time.
So you get a little distracted.

焼き肉は 、 焼きつつ 話しつつ 食べないといけませんから、
結構忙しいですよね。

at the same time → 同時に

distracted → 気がそらされる


Konata:
And when you're grilling beef tongue with green onions, that cooks really fast!
ねぎ タン 塩って すぐに 焼けちゃうから 特に慌ただしいじゃん。

grill → ここでは"焼く"という動詞で使われている

green onion → 葱


Tsukasa:
Oh, you're so right.
It's already done cooking by the time you flip it over, isn't it?
そうだよね 、 一回引っ繰り返しただけで もう 焼けちゃってるもんね。

be done ~ing → ~し終わっている

flip over → 引っ繰り返す


Konata:
Wait.
You flip it over?
引っ繰り返す?


Tsukasa:
Huh?

Konata:
You flip it over?

Tsukasa:
Hm.

Konata:
You should never flip beef tongue with green onions!
ねぎ タン 塩を 引っ繰り返しちゃ 駄目だよ。


Tsukasa:
Why shouldn't I flip it?
え ?  そうなの ?


Konata:
'Cause if you flip it over, all the green onions on top will fall into the grill!
だって 引っ繰り返したら 上に載ってる 葱が 落っこちちゃうじゃん。

fall into → 落ちる、はまる


Tsukasa:
Yeah, I guess you're right.
あ   そっか


Konata:
You don't need to flip it over at all.
You roast it on one side and the heat cooks it all the way through.
あれは 引っ繰り返さないで 、片面だけ を 焼けば 、 自然に 火が 通るんだよ

at all → 全く

roast → 焼く

heat cooks it → 火はそれを調理する → 火が通る

all the way through → 直訳で"全てを通じて" となるので、ここでは全体に火がいきわたることを意味している


Tsukasa:
I get it.
I guess I'll do that from now on.

そうか 、これからそうしようっと。

from now on → 今から


Konata:
You absolutely, positively never flip it.
絶対引っ繰り返しちゃ 駄目だから。

 


Miyuki:
Never flip it.
そう なんですか …


Konata:
Ever.

Konata:
Oh, which end of a chocolate cornet is the head - the fat end or the skinny end?
あ、ところで 太いほうと 細いほう 、どっちが チョココロネ の 頭 ?


Tsukasa:

Kagami:

超bad boy...

such a → 強調の意味で使われている。badを強調している。


Kagami:
What's with all the kidnappings lately?
I mean, these guys imprison girls and force them to call them "Master" and stuff.
It's sick.
最近監禁事件とか 多いよね。
女の子に 自分のこと 、 御主人様とか 呼ばせたりさ。

what's with → ~はどうしたんだ?

(例) What's with your car?(君の車、一体どうしたんだ?)

kidnap → 誘拐する

imprison → 閉じ込める

force O to~ → Oに~することを強制する

sick → 危ない

Tsukasa:
Oh...

Konata:
I think it's about guys playing way too many dating sims and erotic games.
The "Master/Slave" thing is a pretty common scenario, you know.
それってさ 、 モラル 云々より、
単にギャルゲー や エロゲー のやり 過ぎって ことじゃない ?
よくある シチュ だしさ。

pretty common → よくある


Kagami:
Oh yeah, like you'd know all about that.
Wait, you're in the eleventh grade, how do you know about erotic game scenarios?!
そりゃ まんま あんたの ことでしょう が。
...って ちょっと 待て。
なんで アダルトゲーム の 内容、 知ってるんだ?  高校二年生!

eleventh grade → アメリカでは小学・中学・高校の学年は連続して表現されるので、11年生 → 高校2年生となる


Konata:
You're amazing.
You're always at the top of the class.
いっつも 成績上位で すごいよね

 


Miyuki:
Huh?
え ?


Konata:
Don't you have any faults, Miyuki-san?
みゆき さん 欠点とか あるの ?


Miyuki:
It's a little embarrassing, but I guess I tend to think about things too much.
So much that I end up spacing out.
I sometimes cut my finger using the veggie slicer.
Ow!
Sometimes I'll trip on my feet and fall down.
Or, a corner of my tote bag will get caught in the train's door.

Miyuki:

Konata:
Clumsy is sexy.
ドジ っ 子属性。

Tsukasa:
Kona-chan, what have you been thinking this whole time?
こなちゃん の 頭では どんな 映像が 映ってたの !?



Konata:
How come you wear glasses?
I mean you're really pretty, but you can only appeal to a tiny section of the fan base.

みゆき さん、 ルックス いいのに 何で眼鏡なの ?
特定の 人種しか 狙えないよ ?

appeal to → アピールする

tiny → とても小さい

fan base → ファングループ

Tsukasa:

Besides the whole popularity thing, don't glasses actually make your vision worse?
How come you never switched to wearing contacts?

Miyuki:
Well, it's a little embarrassing to admit now that I'm in a high school.
But I suppose you could say... I'm afraid of contact lenses!
Actually, I'm pretty scared to put anything into my eyes.
I can't even open my eyes underwater.

I suppose you could say~ → ~と言えるかもしれない

be afraid of~ → ~を恐れている

put O into ~ → Oを~の中に入れる


Konata:
Damn! She's a natural airhead.
A total cutie pie!
くそお 、 素でかわいいな 、 この 人 、天然系か。

airhead → 頭が空っぽな、間抜けな という意味なので、natural airhead で天然バカ

Konata:
Hey, isn't that Miyuki-san over there?
あ 、 あれ 、 みゆき さん じゃない ?

 


Tsukasa:
Huh?

Konata:
I wonder if she broke down and decided to get some contacts.
I guess she's probably better off with the glasses after all.
検眼に 来たのかな ?  コンタクト の。
みゆき さん は 、 ずっと あのままの 方がいいかもね。

break down → 壊す、故障するという意味もあるが、ここでは分析するの意味で使われていると思われる。目を分析する → 検眼となる

better off with~ → ~の方がいい


Tsukasa:
That must have hurt.
いたそう …


Konata:
And she's that way naturally.

天然記念物だね。
